Illustrated with large folding map tipped in, 8 maps, 16 colour plates, over 200 black & white photo illustrations. First Edition/First Printing. Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine and front board. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The author was the Director of the National Geographic Expeditions to the Mt. Katmai region of Alaska from 1917-19. The Mt. Katmai region was the site of one of the world's largest volcanic eruptions. The dramatic effects of that eruptions are photographically and scientifically documented in the detailed report. The folding map shows the Katmai National Monument, Alaska, est. In 1919. The Katmai region is noted for its Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and for its brown bears. EB; 9.1 X 6.6 X 1.1 inches .
