About This Item

Philadelphia: Casemate. VG in VG DJ. (2016). A hell-bent-for-leather fighter pilot, Elwyn G. Righetti remains one of the most elusive commanders of WWII. Arriving . late in the war he led the England-based 55 Fighter Group against the Nazis during the closeing months of the fight with no-holds-barred aggressiveness that transformed the group from a middling organization into a headlines-grabbing team that had to make excussed to no one. Indeed, Righetti's boldness paid off as he quickly achieved ace status and additionally scored more straging victories-27-than any other Eighth Air Force pilot. His recklessness paid a price. His aircraft was hit while strafing an enemy air field only 4 days before the 44th flew its last mission. Righetti coaxed his crippled fighter throug one more firing pass before making a successful crash landing. Immediately he radioed his men that he was fine and asked them to reassure his family. He was never heard from again. .
