About This Item

1870 Vanity Fair ART Henry Bulwer Frederick III of Prussia Illustrated COLOR

A rare printing of the first volume of the Vanity Fair Album. Vanity Fair is best known for full-page, color lithographs of world celebrities and dignitaries including artists, athletes, royalty, , scientists, authors, and scholars. More than 2000 of these images appeared, and they are considered the chief cultural legacy of the magazine, forming a pictorial record of the period. According to author and editor Jehu Junior,

"The Vanity Fair Portraits are and remain the only work of their kind ever attempted; and as such they must always hold a special and distinct place as a permanent record of men of eminence in the nineteenth century."

This 1870 edition includes 24 full page color plates of famous figures including

· Marquis of Westminster

· The Duke of Sutherland

· Lord Henry Gordon-Lennox
