About This Item

London: The Falcon Press, 1949. First Thus. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Very Good-. C. Stewart (dust jacket design). 12mo. Pp. [4], 5-87, [1]. Translated by Roland Gant. Illustrated with reproductions of old photos, letters and artwork. Bound in full blue cloth with gilt lettering stamped on spine. Foxing to endpapers. In the printed dust jacket that shows light edge-wear, and foxing to rear pane. Price of 7/6 intact on front panel. Gift inscription on the front free endpaper from Derek Patmore. The 1954 gift inscription from Derek Patmore, the journalist and author, is to a "Mrs. Strauss." Although we have only supposition, the recipient would seem likely related to C. A. Strauss, the Oxonian poet whose was killed in WWII Italy; Patmore wrote the introduction to A Soldier Looks Back The Journals of Cyril Anthony Strauss (1951). Indeed, Patmore wrote his own book on Proust, Homage to Marcel Proust (1971), for which Bibesco wrote the introduction.

Bibesco's chosen title, the Veiled Wanderer, was an epithet Proust used to describe his youthful self, when his sparkling conversation begat untold invitations to all manner of parties. In addition to the letters reproduced here, Bibesco has added a narrative of her own experiences with Proust and his circle, Dust jacket, designed by C. Stewart, is now enclosed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
