Dust jacket is clean, has edgewear, small chip near center of rear panel, not price clipped;photo and bio of author on rear panel; enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover. From 1867 to 1889, James Pope-Hennessy's grandfather, Sir John Pope Hennessy, served as governor of some of the more backward colonies of the Victorian British Empire. His tour of duty took him from Labuan, near Borneo, to the West African Settlements, to the Bahamas, Barbados, Honk Kong, and finally to the tiny island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. He saw his governorships as an opportunity to bring equality to the subject peoples, who were deprived of any voice in their own government, and he fought stubbornly toward that end in every colony he administered..
