About This Item

Aarau, H. R. Sauerländer, 1812. 507 pp.; XII, 528 pp., 2 leaves errata. 8vo. 19th century calf, spines gilt, gilt borders around sides. Exlibris Baron Wentworth in vol. 1. Aarau, H. R. Sauerländer, 1812. First edition, vol. I from 1806 was re-issued with a new title-page in the same year as vol. II appeared ("Titelauflage"). After J. J. Bodmer in the 18th century failed to realize his plan to create a separate "Zürcherisches Idiotikon", Franz Joseph Stalder (1757-1833), a priest, philologist and canon in Beromünster produced this first Swissgerman dictionary. As the work was done prior to the foundation of modern dialectology, these two volumes present a remarkable achievement and were with other regional dictionaries the predecessors of the monumental work "Schweizerisches Idiotikon" which is published from 1881 onwards. - A nice, clean copy. - Goedeke XII, 139, 216, 6; Zaunmüller 78; Sonderegger 717; Barth 28086. LITERATURE:GERMAN ; HELVETICA: ALLGEMEIN ; HELVETICA ;
