About This Item
Photo Album of very early motorized Fire Department with 42 silver gelatin photos on 15 pages. The photo album has string bound original black leather covers. This album dates to about 1912, and depicts a fire department in what appears to be a small town. The insignia on their uniforms reads "CCFD." The outfit is fully motorized and firefighters well equipped. This is notable, as many fire engines were still horse-drawn, even in larger cities. The back of one photo notes that the woman pictured is sitting on a Kissel car. Kissel was a prominent automobile manufacturer in the early 20th century, specializing in service vehicles such as the fire trucks in this album. The men are posed next to the charred remains of a structure in several photographs. Their outfit could have been professional or volunteer, though they would have been exceptionally equipped for a volunteer department. One unpasted photo showing three men gathered on a fire truck reads, "This Rig is used for carrying back dirty hose. The other three are useless." Overall, this album is a notable example of early firefighting history with many photos of equipment and personnel. In very good condition overall.
