About This Item

Toronto, ON, Canada: Prospero Books, 2000. Hardcover. As New/Near Fine. A Veteran of 1812, The Life of James FitzGibbon, FitzGibbon, Mary Agnes. Published by Prospero Books, Toronto, 2000. Black boards, gilt spine titles, decorated endpapers. 336 pages plus appendices and several black and white illustrations. In unread condition; unclipped dust jacket has sticker residue and light scuffing. Part of the Prospero Canadian Collection. A facsimile reprint of the first manuscript published by William Briggs in 1894. "Lieutenant James FitzGibbon was one of the greatest and most venturesome leaders in the War of 1812. The commander of a troop dubbed the Bloody Boys, he practiced a form of guerilla warfare, at the time considered highly unconventional. It was the lieutenant who, in 1813, received news from Laura Secord of an impending surprise attack at Beaver Dams. And it was FitzGibbon who, despite being vastly outnumbered, obtained an American surrender two days later. After the war, FitzGibbon was twice promoted and helped supress the Rebellion of 1837. A biography, written by his granddaughter, includes selections of his own writing, as well as others of his time, including Isaac Brock."
