About This Item
Madrid, por Thomas Junti, 1622. Large folio. 3 leaves (including the engraved title page). 78 numbered leaves. 3 large folding copper-engraved plates. 19th century half-shagreen. First Edition, extremely rare, published simultaneously with an edition in Spanish, of the account in Portuguese of the celebrations performed in Lisbon during the visit of King of Spain Philipp III for the presentation of his son, the future Philipp IV. The work was redacted by Joao Baptista Lavanha (1550-1624), a Portuguese geographer and historian hired by the Spanish crown. It contains the detailed description of the festivities, ceremonies and speeches which took place during the King's visit, as well as the text of a theatre play performed by the Jesuits ("El rei D. Manuel Conquistador do Oriente", staging a representation of Vasco de Gama) and the account of the bullfights organized in front of the sovereign. Spectacular engraved illustration by Hans Schorquens representing the magnificent commemorative archs built at the expense of the different corporations of art and offices of the city of Lisbon: twelve full-page large engravings included in the pagination, including as well the engraved title page, and three large folding engravings, among which an extraordinary panoramic view of the vessels of the Royal Wing in the Lisbon harbour, by paintor Domingo Vieira. "A very full and interesting description is given of the processions and festivities held in the King's honour; and the excellent plates include a large folding plate, designed by the court painter, Domingo Vieira, depicting the arrival at Lisbon harbour; various architectural engravings of the triumphal arches which were placed along the route, symbolizing the sovereignty of Philip III; an engraving of the silver model of the Portuguese royal family tree, with life-size figures of the eighteen Kings of Portugal, which was made by the silversmiths of Lisbon; plan of the Council Chamber at the Cortes; etc." (Maggs Bros). A very nice wide-margined copy, carefully bound in the 19th century. Palau, 133207. Maggs Bros, Spanish Books, 515 (extraordinarily highly priced £52 10s).
