About This Item

London: Elliot Stock, 1885.. Two volumes. Small octavo. Contemporary three-quarter calf. Binding quite worn, but internally sound, upper joint of second volume split, spine stamping obliterated. Small gilt morocco bookplate (a hunting horn within a gilt circle, without text) in each volume. Internally very good. A facsimile of the first edition, with a Preface by Austin Dobson. A lovely association copy, inscribed in the first volume in ink: "Margaret Burne-Jones from her father Dec. 1885." The recipient's name is embellished with two branches with leaves and a small drawing of a bird. On the next blank page appears an inscription in another hand, in ink: "Laura Tennant. married. May 21 1885 [/] Laura Lyttleton. S. April 24 1886." Laura Tennant (later Lyttleton) was an intimate friend of the Burne-Jones family. She sat for a pencil portrait by Edward, ca. 1885, and she served as a model for a mermaid in "The Depths of the Sea." (1886). She owned a number of works by him, and was a prominent member of the artistic and literary circle, The Souls. She married Alfred Lyttleton in 1885, but died after childbirth on Easter Sunday, 1888. Burne-Jones designed a memorial plaque to her which is in Mells parish church, in Somerset.
