De Mare traces the golden era and decline of the woodblock artists during the 19th century in England, including their dramatic re-emergence with the private press advocates of the 1890s. He discusses the technique of engraving on the end grain, and the relationship between the artists of the time and their engravers. With a two page bibliography of the subject.

Very attractively designed by Peter Guy and with the decorated paper design cut in vinyl by John Laurence. A clean, near fine copy in a mildly soiled and edgeworn, very good DW, in archival mylar.

Jacket is soiled front and back, and is rubbed along top and bottom edges, with creases, nicks, and closed tears top and bottom of spine (about 1cm long).
