About This Item

London: Printed for T. Walkley and B. Fisher, 1635. Covers bordered with two gilt fillets, corner rosettes. Spine in six panels, floral gilt, red leather spine label, dated at foot of spine. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Silk marker. Bound by Eedy Binder, 37 Tavistock Sq. Two old auction catalogue notes glued to a front preliminary page. One additional portrait of Charles III placed before the engraved frontispiece. "By Tho. May" added to title-page in old hand along with "WC LIB", likely the initials from library of an early owner. Evidence of paper label removal from rear pastedown, no loss of marbled paper. Front cover detached.. Old chip has been repaired at top of spine with no loss of leather. Underlining and marginal lines intermittently through the text. Paper tear near botton at free edge of G3, an apparent paper defect without loss of letters. Minor hole in paper near free edge of I2-I3. Single pin-size worm hole at top of page beginning at D2 and ending a K4, where it becomes vermiform for several pages. Lacking final blank leaf, O4. This history in verse is dedicated to Charles the First who commissioned this history of Edward the Third as well as a history of Henry the Second two years earlier. Housed in a custom box showing minor wear. We find 29 libraries worldwide listing this title on World Cat. ABPC shows three copies at auction since 1978. See STC 17719. . First Edition.
