About This Item

Loncon: G. G. and J. Robinson, 1797. First edition. Leather over boards. Octavo. [6], cxiv, [errata leaf], 596 pages. Near fine. Full modern calf with gilt-stamped spine titles, new endpapers. Lacking original half title. Faint tide marking to lower fore corner of some leaves, else interior is bright and clean. A very handsome, sturdy copy.. Jonathan Boucher was staunch Loyalist yet a friend of George Washington's, and his is an important perspective on the American Revolution.

Boucher came to America from England in 1759, as a private tutor for families of Virginia planters. He was ordained in the Anglican Church and served as rector of several churches in Virginia and Maryland, including St. Anne's in Annapolis.

Boucher tutored John Parke Custis, George Washington's stepson, and was quite close to Washington. His ongoing admiration for his old friend, despite being on opposite sides of the Revolution, is evident in the 4 page Dedication of this work to Washington. A sample:

"...I was never more than your political enemy; and every sentiment even of political animosity has, on my part, long ago subsided. Permit me then to hope, that this tender of renewed amity between us may be received and regarded as giving some promise of that perfect reconciliation between our two countries which it is the sincere aim of this publication to promote."

Uncommon but important source on the Revolution, with a close connection to Annapolis.

Ref. HOWES B641; SABIN 6839;.
