In this brilliantly original and ambitious study Elizabeth Abel discloses the unsuspected complexities of Virginia Woolf's relation to psychoanalysis. In reading Woolf's major works in the context of contemporaneous psychoanalytic narratives, Abel undertakes several related tasks: she uncovers the parallels between Woolf's narratives and those produced concurrently by Sigmund Freud and Melanie Klein; defines Woolf's relation to the psychoanalytic culture that emerged in London in the 1920s; reconstructs the discourse on gender and history that spanned literature, psychoanalysis, and anthropology during that decade; and charts the shifts in Woolf's engagement with psychoanalytic fictions across the two decades of her career.
