Contemporary speckled calf, VG. 2 volumes, [xii]+lix+487pp, vi+[xiv]+671pp, engraved frontis', bindings rather rubbed at the edges, upper hinge to volume 1 split but holding, head of spines rubbed, spines tooled in gilt with contrasting red & green labels, typical of Hanway. some wear but a nice set. Bookplate of Sir John Smith Burges to each volume. Scarce philanthropic work arranged in the form of dialogues between a father & daughter, which was intended to improve the morals of servants. Jonas Hanway [ 1712 - 1786 ], the English traveller and philanthropist who, it is claimed, was a pioneer of the use of the umbrella in Britain.

A fine book will look almost like the day it was bought, a VG one will have some evidence of prior ownership, G means a nice clean copy, obviously secondhand & P implies a COMPLETE copy that has suffered a hard life & will need some TLC. We take into account the books age when grading, so a 250 year old book graded as VG will look more second hand that a 5 year old book graded the same. On the Net since 1998. All prices are in GBP.
