This epic poem explores the soul's journey to God through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, guided by the figures of Virgil, Beatrice, and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, representing reason, divine grace, and mysticism, respectively. Originally written in Tuscan dialect, which shaped modern Italian, the three-part poem combines allegory with realism. Cary's translation captures the essence of Dante's narrative that intertwines spiritual redemption with literary innovation.
