About This Item

Philadelphia: The Jewish Publication Society of America, 1904. First edition. Hardcover. fair. Octavo. XXVI, 491, [1], ix. Original cloth with blind-stamped printer's device on front board, and red lettering on front cover and spine. Printer's device on title-page. A sample of American reactions to the Kishinev pogrom of 1903, where Jews were attacked and dozens killed by a Christian mob, fueled by anti-Semitic reports of the murder of a Christian child, while Czarist officials either did nothing or possibly encouraged the violence. This book also offers a fascinating window on the position of Jews in the United States, showing that Jews did advocate effectively on behalf Russian Jewry, many of whom were now emigrating to the United States in response to pogroms such as Kishinev. Some age wear to binding with spine slightly sunned. Also shows shelf wear. Interior binding starting. Endpapers aged toned. Overall in fair to good condition. Cyrus Adler was a leading figure in the 19th and early 20th century American Jewish community as well as an academic scholar. He served as president of Dropsie College in Philadelphia.
