About This Item

First Polish translation of Kurt Vonnegut's "Mother Night", published with a preface Vonnegut wrote especially for this Polish publication. Vonnegut later claimed that he first heard about the underground NOWA publication when he was asked to write an introduction for this edition and that he was "flattered that someone was prepared to take risks" in order to publish what he wrote. A year after this publication Vonnegut traveled to Poland to meet with dissident Polish writers, as well as with Lech Walesa and gave an interview to the underground newspaper Tygodnyk Mazowsze. The translator, Lech Jęczmyk (b. 1936) was a Solidarity activist and an editor of a variety of underground publications such as "Vacat" and "Sprawa". Likely in order to protect Jęczmyk, who is openly credited in this edition, the text is marked as "published without the knowledge or consent of the translator."

As of July 2021, KVK, OCLC show four copies in North America.
