About This Item
The Hague: Pieter de Hondt, 1746. Coypel. 4to. Title in red and black with engraved vignette, 31 engraved plates after Charles-Antoine Coypel (28), Le Bas (1) and Trésmoulièrs (1), wood-engraved initials and tailpieces. [ii], xxvi, 420 pp., text in Dutch. Modern half leather and cloth, spine label; crease to title-page corner, text toned, occasional light foxing and spotting, previous owner's initials in ink to upper corner of title-page First edition of this Dutch edition of Don Quixote, published simultaneously in a French language edition, with Coypel's celebrated illustrations. The original horizontal configuration of the scenes was necessarily cropped to fit the vertical quarto format and the original large scale of the engravings, printed 1723-4, was much reduced here. Still, this edition "assured wide circulation" (Ray) of Coypel's illustrations. "It is not too much to say that the pictorial tradition associated with Cervantes' masterpiece owes as much to Coypel as to any other artist" (ibid).REFERENCE: Cohen/De Ricci, p. 216 (French ed.); Palau 53224; Ray French 4 (French ed.); Rius 806
