About This Item

Rouen: Ch. Ferrand, 1725. First Collected Edition. Hardcover. Margins of the first leaves of Volume I reinforced, some browning and staining in the margins throughout with occasional margin reinforcement. Light wear to corners of bindings. Very Good. Five quarto (7-1/4" x 9-3/4") volumes bound in modern mottled calf leather, blind-ruled border on covers, gilt ornamented spines on 5 raised bands, gilt-lettered black morocco spine labels; [16] - 648 - [12], [2] - 565 - [1 bl.] - [12], [2] - 520 - [16], [2] - 522 - [12], [2] - 498 - [14] pages. First collected edition (original French edition of LEVANT was 1700, MOSCOVY was 1718) of the travels in the Levant, Moscow, Persia, and the East Indies by the Dutch artist and traveler C. De Bruyn (1652-1627). This edition is augmented by accounts not included in the earlier editions. Engraved illustrations including a frontispiece-portrait by J. B. Scotin, an allegorical frontispiece (page 10), 5 maps of which 4 are folding and 84 plates of which 12 are folding, showing costumes, especially of Greek and Turkish women, views of monuments and historical sites, scenes of everyday life, fauna and flora, etc. Volumes I and II contain the travels to the Levant from 1674-1693 describing Turkey, Palestine, Egypt, Syria, etc. with particularly interesting views of Constantinople, Cairo, Alexandria, Persepolis, and Jerusalem. Volumes III to V comprise his second travels from 1701-1708 to the north of Russia, visiting the Samoyeds, Moscow, Persia, and India. Very interesting account especially for De Bruyn's splendid illustrations. Brunet III-911.
