Beers, author of the Hakluyt Handbook and numerous other scholarly travel works, provides a detailed 104 page introduction, providing a good historical perspective and biography. The two volumes assemble all the documents that relate to Gilbert's voyages and colonizing, a number being published for the first time, the North-West Project 1565-67, Irish schemes 1567-72, passage to Cataia, expedition of 1577-79, 1580-84, Sir George Peckham's reports, North-west Passage, etc, with appendices on the Munster Plantation scheme of 1569 and the Knollys Piracy of 1579.
