About This Item

Paris, c. 1750. Copper engraving, 28 x 43 cms, original hand-colour, blank verso. Part of St Martin’s Church is visible in the foreground on the right; on the left are Christ Church, the Town Hall and the elaborate Carfax Conduit, built in 1615-17 to supply water to both town and university. The letters ON are the intital of the benefactor who paid for its construction, Otho Nicholson, a graduate of Christ Church. It was dismantled in 1787 and given to Lord Harcourt, who re-erected it in his park at Nuneham Courtenay. Print
