About This Item

Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1926. Book. Like New. Full-Leather. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Green 'velvet calf' (suede) with yapp edges. Text block measures 19 cms and binding 21.5 cms in height. PRISTINE. Book as new, no wear - appearing as it did fresh off the press. A splendid and exceedingly rare example of the first edition of the poems of William Henry Drummond, 'one of the most widely-read and loved poets' in Canada. With frontispiece portrait of the author and copyright signature. Kept within the original box which is a little worn with three of the box joints cracked and some rubbing to the rear panel, but otherwise good and sound with title label stating 'Collected Poems of Dr. W. H. Drummond, velvet calf - yapp.' The box label differs from the title on the book binding, Dr. Drummond's Complete Poems, and differs again from the half title-page in the book, The Poetical Works of William Henry Drummond. xxxiii+449 pages. The Dr. William Henry Drummond Poetry Contest was established in 1970 more or less as a result of this first collected edition [("Dictionary of Canadian Biography" Volume XIII (1901-1910)]. Extremely scarce in this state of binding and condition. .
