About This Item
New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1905. Hardcover. 372p., a "lending library" copy of a once-handsome ribbed blue clothbound volume that has titling to glued-on white spine and cover panels (as issued, a decorative touch); casing is severely edgeworn with livid spotting and dirt, spine lettering nearly obliterated, top and tail rims frayed and torn, library-processing remnants mar front and rear endsheets leaving a gap at rear hinge subsequent to excision of a leaf. Text remains legible throughout, frontispiece is very good under its intact tissue-guard, first edition, a reading copy. About workers in the New York construction industry. *Rideout novel. Hanna 3157. "Although overdrawn, the novel is an early example of realism in the labor novel. Union meetings, the life of the walking delegate, struggles to make make unions democratic, and behind-the-scenes strike negotiations are well reported although Scott's style is undistinguished and his plot overcomplicated." *Blake p. 230.
