Covent Garden, England: Country Life Ltd, 1943 Hard Cover. Presumed First Edition. 10 x 7 1/2. 120 pp. Author beautifully combines observations of nature with reflections on history and literature and lore: thus the story of Gilgmesh juxtaposed wi th chapters on plovers, insects, wrens, the Paleozoic, cobwebs, larks and streams. Tunnicliffe's engravings are beautiful - many full-page. Binding is sky-blue cloth on boards with dk. blue lettering - lovely cond, bright, tight and clean. Endpapers, half-title and title pages also approx. a dozen other pages, have some foxing. The sketches of country life were written while the author was in Wen h am, Rogate, Sussex, and at Laity Water in Devonshire, England. Emblem of the Book Production War Economy standard appears on reverse side of title page. Tunnicliffe's illus are splendid: a full-pag e i llus of a swallowtail butterfly on Queen Anne's Lace. In the background are the ruins of war. Author discusses the ravages of "the Nazi Onslaught". A remarkable book Binding: v. good. Text(due to s ome foxing): good.. F.
