About This Item
New York: The Limited Editions Club , 1957. First Thus 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/Publishers Origianl Slipcase. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. William Sharp. This beautiful Limited Editions Club edition of a book which many have read and which assuredly none who did so have forgotten. A man privileged to write some words of prefatory comment on it might begin by saying that here is a novel which ought to be read, but there are better reasons than any sort of obligation. Are not all of us troubled by the time in which we live (1957 or 2013) - the mystery of the dark tyrannies which have held it in their grip, as well as of the awesome, startling flashes of love for liberty and nobility which so often stag through the darkness.John Hersey has spread for us a canvas on which our whole modern human scene is drawn in symbolic outline and firm detail, so that looking at it we can see where we are and what we have to do. Those lines are paraphrased from the wonderful introduction by George N. Shuster. Book is as new, flawless and unread. The illustrations are pen and ink drawings and twelve original aquatints drawn on plates by William Sharp. This is copy 88 of 1500 signed by the illustrator. The book is also specially inscribed " For ... ....... We are involved in the struggle of Humanity against Anti-humanity." p. 396 Dated Sept 24, 1985 John Hersey. Publishers slipcase is very fine with black lettering at top of spine. The Wall is a very special and important novel and this copy is a rare and wonderful of a limited edition.
