A deluxe copy of Justin Kaplan's biography of the American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892). With two sections of black & white photos, showing people, scenes and things from Whitman's life. Justin Kaplan produced several biographies of notable people, and was general editor of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. --- In black full bonded leather covers with gilt ornamentation stamped on front, back and spine; three raised bands on spine. All edges gilt. Interior with grey silk moire endpapers with matching sewn in satin ribbon placemarker. Issued as part of the publisher's First Edition Society series. One of an unspecified number in this limited edition. --- A newish, tightly-bound, unmarked copy but with small scratches to textblock fore-edge gilding and a few small indentations to back cover fore-edge.
