About This Item

New York: Hastings House. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. 217 pages. The dust jacket art is Ely's own drawing from his diary. A Mid-19th Century Seafarer's Diary. Written before Dana's Two Years Before the Mast, Ely traveled by way of the Horn to California & witnessed the Gold Rush. His diary records "a vivid account of the the raw mining towns, and brawling, gambling, profane populace." After further and varied adventures he boards a ship heading for Bombay (Mumbai). During this voyage his knowledge of 'doctering' was often called upon. Once at Bombay he takes up the post as the American Vice Counsel. This is his only surviving diary. Minor wear along the board edges along with an ex-libris book plate and the former owners name & date on the ffep. Otherwise a clean straight copy in unclipped, very slightly dulled dust jacket. Now in archival cover. ; 8vo .
