Notorious exploration hoax travelogue from the 1870s. 283 pp. Colour frontispiece, of the highly suspect 'Mount Hercules' (32,000 feet, taller than Everest). Fold-out map at rear showing the 'expedition' route and features. This colourful, entirely imaginary exploration travelogue was soon after publication shown to have been an elaborate hoax, the author never having set foot in New Guinea. Book and binding clean and bright. Name inscription (of Walter Wren, Powis Square, London, at head of contents page). Just a little wear to leather at head of spine. Overall VG+
