About This Item
New York, 1856. 400pp. Portrait frontispiece plus 8pp. advertisements. Modern cloth, leather label. Occasional fox mark. Else quite clean internally. Very good. "Brewerton was a correspondent of the NEW YORK HERALD. The book contains his letters to the newspaper. He was in Kansas Territory from December 1855 to January 1856. He was not a partisan, and his book is valuable because he recorded both Free-State and Pro- slavery versions of what was happening in Kansas Territory" - Dary. Brewerton was in California during the Mexican-American War and in 1848 he travelled east from Los Angeles to Taos over the Old Spanish Trail with Carson, later going farther east on the Santa Fe Trail. DARY, KANZANA 19. SABIN 7765.
