About This Item

Boston, MA: William R. Ware / J. R. Osgood. Good. 1880. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; c1880. This is a portfolio of plates which accompany his treatise on Modern Perspective. This is a folio sized portfolio of brown cloth with three cloth ties at the edges. The portfolio is in Good condition, with wear, rubbing and beginning fraying to the spine ends, spine joints and corners. The cloth ties are generally clean and solid, though the tie to the rear foredge has broken close to the boards. There are 24 of the 27 plates present - all in very clean, bright condition. Also included are five pages of a "Perspective Syllabus" for the course, with the owner's initials inked at the bottom edge of the first page. Plates #11-14 are lacking. The author, William Robert Ware, is credited with designing the High Street Church in Brookline, MA, along with Harvard's Memorial and Weld Halls and several other local landmarks. In 1865, he became the first Professor of Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1881 he moved to New York, where he founded the School of Architecture at Columbia University. "William Robert Ware's lifelong work as an architectural educator had an unparalleled influence on the development of the profession in America. The models he established, first at MIT and later at Columbia University, provided the foundation for numerous architectural programs throughout the country. " (from Wikipedia) Only one copy of these plates are found on Worldcat at the University of Champaign Illinois. Scarce. .
