Previous owner's name. Front hinge cracked and glued. The troops are in a bad way, at war in the middle of India. Their longed-for reinforcements will not arrive in time. The Brigadier-General has given his daughter into the hands of another soldier for her safekeeping. Thus begins the tale which went through thirty printings in its first three years. 406 pp..
