[New Hampshire? c. 1910s-1920s?]. Two photographs on card mounts. 4¾ x 3¾ inches and 3¾ x 4¾ inches. Vertical photo embossed in blind on verso "Collins Trade Mark." Minor rubbing to mounts; very good.
Two photographs depicting circus-like clown characters and an elaborately decorated wagon and horse each advertising L. C. Prescott's grocery business.
One photo shows an Uncle Sam figure in a wild stars and stripes suit and top hat standing alongside a similarly striped and flower decked wagon surmounted by an American flag.
On the side of the wagon appear to be mounted dinner plates, arranged neatly in formation.There also seem to be flattened, empty printed and ornamented bags of products, perhaps cloth or paper bags for such staples as sugar and flour one could buy at Prescott's groceries. Even the wheels of the wagons have been "done up" and covered in two-toned fabric. The horse is clad in decorative raiment, perhaps for a street parade.
The other photo shows a tall androgynous cake-faced "clown" hold a hand-lettered sign reading "We are Going to Prescott's to Buy Our Groceries". Protruding from, or attached to, his belly is apparently a mannequin of a life-sized dwarf or midget, presumably attired as a jester. The effect, overall, seems sinister and surreal. The photograph was taken on a sunny day near a leafy tree and a horse hitched to a covered wagon.
We'll take a wild stab and speculate L. C. Prescott groceries were based in Conway, New Hampshire; then succeeded by Putney's Store Company.¹
