After the publication of his debut story collection in 1975 (Separate Flights), Dubus devoted his writing life to the story form. Considered one of the greatest American short story writers of the twentieth century, his work is notable for its spare prose and illuminative insights into the human heart. Dubus is often compared to Anton Chekhov. Dubus is considered among the most talented American short story writers of his generation. Born and raised in Louisiana, he graduated from the revered University of Iowa Writers Workshop and spent his adult life living and writing in blue-collar mill towns in northern New England. His short stories and essays appeared in distinguished literary journals and magazines across the country and were selected for numerous editions of the Best American Short Stories series, as well as the O. Henry Awards and Pushcart Prize anthologies. Dubus's work earned him MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships, the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story, the Rea Award for the Short Story, the Jean Stein Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and nominations for a National Book Critics Circle Award and Pulitzer Prize. In addition to seven collections of stories and novellas, Dubus published one novel and two collections of essays. The critically acclaimed films In the Bedroom and We Don't Live Here Anymore were adapted from his stories. We Don't Live Here Anymore: Collected Short Stories & Novellas, Volume 1 was published on June 20, 2018. Beattie has been included in four O. Henry Award Collections, in John Updike's The Best American Short Stories of the Century, and in Jennifer Egan's The Best American Short Stories 2014. In 2000, she received the PEN/Malamud Award for achievement in the short story. In 2005, she received the Rea Award for the Short Story. She was the Edgar Allan Poe Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Virginia. She is a member of The American Academy of Arts and Letters and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She and her husband, Lincoln Perry, live in Maine and Key West, Florida. The New Yorker Stories was published on November 16, 2010. ISBN: 978-1567-9261-63. BS12817, 12829.
