New York: Random House, 1959. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Near Fine in a Good jacket, unclipped ($4.95), generally rubbed and toned, a close tear across the front panel. Blue cloth with black ink panels and gilt lettering. Square, bound with a dark blue top stain and some reading wear, clean internally. Rand's debut novel, one that introduced a theme relevant to most of her work: the individual against the collective. "WE THE LIVING is not a story of politics, but of the men and women who have to struggle for existence behind the Red banners and slogans. It is a picture of what those slogans do to human beings, what kind of men are able to survive and which of them remain as the ultimate winners.
Synopsis
We the Living is the first novel published by the American novelist Ayn Rand. It was also Rand's first expression against communism. First published in 1936, it is a story of life in post-revolutionary Russia. Ayn Rand observes in the foreword to this book that We the Living was the closest she would ever come to writing an autobiography. Her working title for the novel had been "Airtight. " We the Living was first completed in 1934, but, despite the support it received from H.L.
