Cambridge: At the University Press, 1922. 4to. xii, 236 pp. Frontisp. map, maps, diagrams, charts, tables, equations. Blue publisher’s cloth, gilt lettering on spine (minor bumping to couple corners, shelfwear, minor edgewear), still a VG bright copy, from the library of Dr. Athelstan Frederick Spilhaus (1911-1998), noted South African-American geophysicist and oceanographer who developed the bathythermograph for measuring ocean depths and temperature changes from a moving vessel and proved invaluable in submarine warfare, as well as for proposing the establishment of Sea Grant Colleges, parallel to the successful land-grant colleges, w/ ownership markings on ffep. First edition of this groundbreaking work proposing tracking weather and weather fluctuations by computing atmospheric changes. Richardson devised a method of solving mathematical equations describing the planetary atmospheric flow by dividing the globe into cells, and specifying the dynamical variables in each cell. He described how “a myriad of computers are at work upon the weather of the part of the map where each sits” with him positing that about 64,000 processors wold work on forecasting analogous to a modern parallel processor. His weather prediction algorithm preceded the necessary changes of a better understanding of the fluid dynamics of the atmosphere, stable computational algorithms to integrate the equations, regular observations of the free atmosphere, and powerful modern supercomputers. Richardson (1881-1953) was deemed by some as “the man who invented weather forecasting,” and was also instrumental in developing along with Quincy Wright, Pitirim Sorokin, Kenneth Boulding, and others the scientific analysis of conflict. Excellent condition. First publication of the resolution principle, the standard of logical deduction in AI applications. The basic computational method in logic programming, the unification algorithm, was proposed by mathematician Jacques Herbrand in 1930, but its first practical use was not discovered until Robinson introduced it in this paper as the basic operation of his resolution principle. "Robinson described his resolution principle as 'machine-oriented' in that it was particularly suitable for proofs to be performed by computer, having only one rule of inference that could be applied many times. Robinson's resolution has since been used as the standard of logical deduction in AI applications" (Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace 865). 1684 Japanese Mathematics Yoshinori Abacus Math Illustrated Magic Squares Kyoto

A rare, 17th century Japanese woodblock print of "Sanpouketsugishou" written by Isomura Yoshinori, a mathematician. Isomura was called 'the master of the abacus' because he solved problems that would otherwise not be possible without using algebra, and the abacus features in many illustrations as does his interest in 'magic squares, magic circles and magic wheels.' This book contains solutions to 12 problems published in an earlier work and provides 150 more.

This rare edition is written in the typical handwritten column format bound in the "fukurotoji" style (Keio) complete with illustrations of mathematic problems, shapes, diagrams, and people and animals using an abacus throughout!

Discounted for final fair hours!San Jose, CA: Billiken Press, 1971. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. Softcover 4to, 44pp. No date, but an article about the book appears in the Dec 3, 1971 San Jose State "Spartan Daily" newspaper. Adhesive remainder to the upper left cover, mild rubbing and edgewear. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
