About This Item

Charleston, South Carolina, USA: Arcadia Publishing, 2009. First Edition. Paperback. As New/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. First Edition. Trade Paperback As New. Clean and illustrated wraps, tight, solid and square binding. Internals As New. The Images of America Series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today, helping to preserve the local heritage. This volume portrays a town that began as a mill town, when in the 1890s its founder, Abner Weed, purchased land for the first mill; by 1905 there were two mills, a box factory, bunkhouse, boardinghouse, cookhouse, company store, post office and hospital--a thriving little town. On the other side of the town land was purchased for a ranch in 1898 that was soon divided into lots and Shastina was born, a rowdy town of saloon lined streets, brothels, and private shopping business to rival the compamny stores on theo ther side of town. The photographs in this collection show these towns at their heyday. 127 pages. 6.5 x 9.25 inches. 2009, Arcadia Publishing, Charleston, South Carolina, USA
