Half speckled calf; six spine compartments between gilt rules with red morocco spine label in second compartment reading "Views." Marbled paper over boards. Engraved title page. Caption and running title: Picturesque Illustrations of Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham, and Northumberland. This title was issued in parts and this volume apparently contains only the first part. It is bound with parts of "Devonshire Illustrated, in a Series of Views" (Fisher, Son & Co., 1832), consisting of an engraved title page, one unpaginated page, pages 6-8, 13-28, 53-60, 105-108, and 16 leaves of engraved plates (possibly a publisher's dummy?). Each leaf has two views. In Good+ Condition: edges rubbed; front joint just starting to separate from tail of spine; lower corner of front board scraped; foxing.

Bickers and Son, London, 1880. Hardcover (approx 5.75 x 8.75 (15 x 22 cm)), 404 pages. Good+ condition. With twelve illustrations reproduced in exact facsimile from drawings made during the voyages. Blue boards with gold trim (two thin lines) decorative gold inlay along edges. Five raised gilt bands evenly spaced across spine. Decorative gold inlay and book title (on faux gold/brown square) between bands. The boards are bumped, rubbed and scratched. Rubbed, with spotting along spine hinges and board edges. The top corner of the front board is rubbed off, revealing the underlaying board. There is what appears to be moisture/water stain across the bottom of the front board. Marbled pastedowns and free endpapers. Pages foxing/browning. There is a very neat inscription dated July 28, 1882 (the book presented as an award) from a school headmaster to a pupil on the free page opposite the half title page. Gilt lettering to spine, a little faded. Slight wear to top and tail of spine. Bookseller's plate "Chas E Lauriat Co, Boston" to lower edge of ffep. Endpapers lightly toned, otherwise a bright crisp copy. The new introduction comprehensively addresses the material changes in Nyasaland since the original publication of this book in 1903, and clarifies some areas which "were somewhat misunderstood".

Bound in green publisher’s cloth. No dust jacket. The binding contains a shelf lean; minor rubbing and bumping are present; the spine and edges are lightly faded. A note is handwritten on the verso of the frontispiece (dated Sept. 1916). The title page shows some age-toning. Minor spots of foxing are present on the prelims and on the outer edge of the title. Interior pages are otherwise clean.

Cover faded, spine label chipped but readable, first and last few pages heavily foxed and stained, rest of contents only occasionally foxed, author's name written on title page ( author's autograph?) and page 2, binding is tight. The observations during his tavels through some of the middle and northern states. Howes D-609.

First Edition. With 28 fine plates, including 16 in colour and 12 in monochrome, and with 34 line drawings within the text, many of which are quite large, decorated title-page printed in black and red. Publisher's original olive cloth-covered boards backed in buckram and ruled and lettered on the spine in dark green titling to spine. Top edge of pages green with front and bottom edges untrimmed. Sound and firm with no staining or foxing to contents. A very clean and tight copy, the text clean and fresh, the plates all very fine, the binding solid.Maxwell, an official artist sent by the Imperial War Museum, was a most original writer, artist and traveler.
