John Simpson Smith was an early fur trapper and spent his entire life on the frontier. He was introduced to the national reading public in Louis Garrard's Wah-to-Yah and the Taos Trail, published in 1848. Includes information on fur trapping, Bent's Fort trader, 30 years with the Cheyenne and Arapaho, official government interpreter, Fort Laramie, Fort Wise, adviser to Indian agents, Army scout and guide, witness to the Sand Creek Massacre, and more. Smith became familiar enough on the frontier to have his picture in Harper's Magazine and to have a listing in the Encyclopedia Britannica. [Clark and Brunet I: 122; Clark and Brunet II: 142]..

The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
