About This Item

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1936. xvi,620pp. including tables, illustrations and maps. Original printed wrappers, expertly repaired at hinges, manuscript title on spine. Spine creased but sturdy. A very good copy. A presentation copy, inscribed on the front wrapper by W.R. Chapline, Chief of the Division of Range Research, and with the ownership signature of Fred G. Renner, Senior Range Examiner in Colorado. Chapline authored three of the sections in the report.

"The purpose of this report was to show the condition of the western range in 1936, how that compared to the original range, and factors responsible for the depletion which had taken place. It aimed to contrast the losses of depletion with the advantages of good management. It also outlined a program for the rebuilding of the range. The report was prepared by a number of members of the Department of Agriculture. It is one of the documents most vital to modern ranching, marking the first great wave of activity by the Soil Conservation Service and the general beginning of better range practices" - Reese. REESE, SIX SCORE 112. ADAMS HERD 2363. DOBIE, p.112
