Philadelphia, 1849. Two volumes. xii,312pp. plus [32]pp. publisher's advertisements; iv,[13]-316pp. Original cloth. Head and toe of spines chipped, light scattered foxing, else very good. First American edition. The author travelled all over the eastern United States as far as the Mississippi Valley, including a trip by land from Washington to New Orleans via Georgia, and return by steamboat. Howes calls this "judicious commentary based on extensive travels." Contains a long discussion of California, with a map of that state as well as New Mexico and Arizona. HOWES M117.
