About This Item

UK: David & Charles, 1989. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 21.4 x 14.4 x 1.8 cm. h/b 175 pages, condition is very good. In the past, shooting has been the prerogative of those fortunate enough to be born into monied families, but today there are more people enjoying shooting in its varied forms than ever before. This can be put down to a number of different reasons: the average person has more leisure time plus, in many cases, is earning more money; landowners and farmers are looking for alternative ways to raise cash in accordance with the Government's interest in encouraging differing land use. This supply and demand has led to the creation of sporting agencies and sporting hotels, so that anyone with a little spare cash can either buy a day's rough shooting, or can take part in a day when three or four hundred birds may be shot. Unfortunately, not everyone fully understands what the gamekeeper is trying to achieve on a shoot: vital points of etiquette and gun safety, plus how any Gun should behave on the field. This book will remove any doubts on the subject; these points, together with details on agencies, bag sizes, the various types of clothing necessary and how to choose the right sort of dog as a shooting companion are discussed in great detail, together with the duties of pickers-up, beaters, flankers and flagmen. Relevant game laws and means of bird indentification are explained, and the benefits of keeping a game-book covered. The author also takes a look at the more prominent shooting personalities of the past. This useful and practical book will be of enormous value to anyone interested in shooting and in the future preservation of his sport.
