About This Item

UK,slim Qrto wraps/softback,illustrated 1st edn thus.[Originally and first published in HB,no dw/dj - as issued by same publisher,a year earlier,1982.This is the first softback edn and also it's appearance.] VG+.No owner inscrptn and no price removal from rear card cover.] Bright, crisp, clean, generally sharp-cornered, glossy, colour pictorial artwork by Raymond Briggs, illustrated card front cover with white lettering,a red triangle to front, lower corner with white lettering indicating its best-seller status in hardback and soon to be a major film,a black spine/backstrip with red+ white letters with a small abrasion partially affecting some of the letters in the title, rear cover with a black background with red+white lettering of the Press,MP's and House of Commons [Hansard] reviews and quotes respectively. All with negligble shelf-wear,bumping, creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present, some inevitable but minor, superficial scoring/indents to covers.Top+fore-edges slightly aged/toned - as usual/normal - contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - appears unread other than my own collation.UK,slim Qrto wraps/softback,1st edn thus,48pp [unpaginated] includes author's potted biography and critics' reviews to lightly foxed/spotted half-title page,double-page plain black blanks, a colour pictorial illustrated title page, colour storyboard/comic strip format with 5 double-page,full page, colour illustration and doube-page plain black blanks at rear of book. Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a softback wrappered book, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a higher grading.Despite them,it really is an exceptional copy for brightness and cleanliness.
A 1982 graphic novell by British artist Raymond Briggs, showing a nuclear attack on Britain by the Soviet Union from the viewpoint of a retired couple,Jim and Hilda Bloggs. The book was later made into an animated film,by director Jimmy Murakami in 1986. The couple were voiced by Sir John Mills and Dame Peggy Ashcroft. The soundtrack consisted of songs, many with an anti-nuclear bent,by rock musicians and groups, such as Roger waters, Genesis, and David Bowie. There was also a BBC R4 dramatisation in 1983, with the voices of Peter Sallis and Brenda Bruce, directed by John Tydeman. The book follows the story of the Bloggs,a couple previously seen in the book 'Gentleman Jim.' One afternoon, the couple hear a message on the radio about an "outbreak of hostilities" in three days' time. Jim immediately starts construction of a fallout shelter (in accordance with the government-issued Protect and Survive brochure, obtained from a public library), while the two reminisce about WW2.Their reminiscences are used both for comic effect and to show how the geopolitical situation has changed, but also how nostalgia has blotted out the horrors of war. A constant theme is Jim's optimistic outlook and his unshakeable belief that the government knows what is best and has the situation under full control, coupled with Hilda's attempts to carry on life as normal. Raymond Redvers Briggs (b.1934).Born in London, son of a milkman. Studied at Wimbledon School of Art (at the age of fifteen,1949-53) and completed a typography course at the Central School of Art.And after National Service,he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (1955- 57).Since 1957,he has been a full-time illustrator and author, mainly of children's books; since 1961,he has been a part-time lecturer in illustration at Brighton Polytechnic. He won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice, once for 'The Mother Goose Treasury' (1966) and then again for 'Father Christmas' (1973),the first book for which he adopted the distinctive strip-cartoon format that he has since used frequently.'The Snowman' had no words, and was adapted by him for television (December 1982); 'When the Wind Blows',a powerful condemnation of nuclear defence (for adults),was adapted for radio (February 1983) and the theatre (April 1983).An accomplished draughtsman,he works in line and watercolour, gouache, pencil and crayons.
Raymond Briggs is one of our most respected and beloved artists, and went on to produce a notable treasure trove of work.Characters that he's created are now icons for generations of children, include 'Fungus the Bogeyman', 'Father Christmas' and,of course, the beloved 'Snowman.' The biography of his parents in graphic novel form,'Ethel & Ernest',also became a bestseller in the UK,and an animated feature film based on the novel will be released in 2016.Briggs has won many other awards over his career including the Kurt Maschler Award, The Children's Book of the Year, the Dutch Silver Pen Award.
