About This Item
New York: The Mysterious Press. Very Good/Very Good. 1991. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo 0892964189 San Francisco private investigator Sharon McCone has been asked by former colleague Anne-Marie Altman-now counsel for the California Coalition for Environmental Preservation-to meet her in the high-desert town of Tufa Lake, near the Nevada border. Altman is looking into the plans of the Transpacific Corporation to reopen a gold mine near the ghost town of Promiseville, where large-scale commercial mining could seriously damage the ecosystem of the area, as well as destroy the historic buildings of the town. Altman tells McCone of some bizarre events that have occurred since she and her associate Ned Sander-man hit town. For example, the disappearance of Earl Hopwood, the prospector who sold Transpacific the mine. And break-ins at the cabins where she and Sanderman are staying. Not to mention the body found floating in the lake. McCone's trail leads her back to San Francisco and to Hong Kong-born industrialist Lionel Ong, head of Transpacific. In the course of finding the truth, McCone must return to Tufa Lake... and confront a killer bent on large-scale destruction. .
