About This Item

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc, 1971. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Very good with some discoloration in a very good lightly water-stained dustwrapper. Three whalers stranded in the Arctic take refuge with an Inuit tribe but slowly corrupt it. Basis for the 1974 film directed by Philip Kaufman with Warren Oates, Timothy Bottoms, and Louis Gossett, Jr., and many native performers. It was the first film in 40 years to be filmed within the Arctic Circle (after 1922's *Nanook of the North* and 1932's *Eskimo*).

Synopsis

In 1896, three survivors from a whaling misadventure are nursed back to health by Eskimo villagers who share their food, women, and way of life with the strangers. In return, the foreigners introduce to the villagers the spirit of competitiveness that rules the white man's world. Map and drawings by the Author.
