Description:
London: Dr. Thornton, 1811. Very good overall. From the small folio "Lottery" edition of The Temple of Flora, the stunning tropical climbing plant is depicted against the trunk of a large tree, with many open and partially opened flowers with white outer petals and pale and dark blue centers. Accompanied by the printed text sheet. After the painting by Philip Reinagle, beautifully engraved by Caldwell. Printed in color and finished by hand, from Dr. Thornton's landmark work the "Temple of Flora", the greatest English color plate flower book. The prints for The Temple of Flora were very expensive to produce, leading to Thornton being forced to sell them at lottery, the Royal Botanic Lottery, under the patronage of the Prince Regent. Color mezzotint 9 x 12", with wide margins. Slightly sunned, slight mat burn.
