About This Item

London, England: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1960. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good / Very Good. Octavo, 9.25 in.x 6.25 in., pp. 240. Illustrated with color and black and white photographs, and fold-out photo of The Eiger showing the route. Blue cloth boards with bright silver lettering to spine. Light staining and sunning to edges of boards. Previous owner's bookplate to front free endpaper. A couple chips along top edge of dustjacket; ink stain at top of dustjacket spine. The Eiger is a 3,967-metre mountain of the Bernese Alps, overlooking Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, just north of the main watershed and border with Valais. "The author also has brilliantly analyzed the values and ethics of moutaineering and the reasons why men risk their lives to scale such forbidding peaks and test their own qualities to the utmost..." (from rear dj flap).

Synopsis

The White Spider dramatically recreates not only the harrowing, successful ascent made by Harrer and his comrades in 1938, but also the previous, tragic attempts at a wall of rock that was recently enshrined in mountaineer Jon Krakauer's first work, Eiger Dreams. For a generation of American climbers, The White Spider has been a formative book--yet it has long been out-of-print in America. This edition awaits discovery by Harrer's new legion of readers.
