James Ramsey Ullman, 1907-1971, was an American writer and mountaineer, writing about the outdoors, and the power of the outdoors over men, not only physically but also for its power to inspire. "The White Tower" is his first and best-selling novel, a tense and dramatic story of the ascent of a mountain in the Alps that has never before been climbed from the side the protagonist climbs it. It is a story of physical rigor and challenge, and also of the meditation and internal dialogue that are part of the whole endeavor. Clean, solid, unmarked volume in light tan full cloth binding with blue lettering on front and spine. Endpapers illustration a small plane flying through the alps over a high altitude cabin, in color. Boards are lightly scuffed on the corners and there is a slight indentation on the upper edge of the front board. Page block edges foxed . Pages 10-11 have a smudge spot near the page numbers, otherwise pages clean and free of markings, lightly toned. 479 pages. 8.25 x 5.5 inches. 1945, J. B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
