Near Fine. #545 of 1500 copies [10.75x7.75in]; 173 pp., chapter heading illustrations, six map reproductions, index; Dark blue cloth covers with gilt lettering on spine, map of San Francisco bay with land and ocean exploration routes on end papers, top and bottom edges trimmed; Minimal shelf wear to covers, edges or corners with slight fading of spine. This book was published by the San Mateo Historical Association for the bicentennial "discovery" of San Francisco Bay and entrance. It covers 12 accounts of Spanish explorers from 1769 to 1776. There are six maps reproduced from Costanso, Crespi, Ayala, Font with later maps from Beechey and the U.S. Coast Survey (1859). There are excerpts of the journals of Portola, Costanso, Crespi, Fages, Verger, Riveria, Palou, Ayala Canizares, and Anza.

From a Book review by Forest and Conservation History, "A sidelight of the main exploratory achievement waas the "discovery" of the redwood trees by Portoloa in October 1769.
