About This Item
London: Hutchinson. Good in Good dust jacket. 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. The true first edition, published the year before the American edition, in hardcover with the original dust jacket. The DJ has a short clean tear at the front cover, some rubbing at extremities, protected in Mylar. Front flap has been price clipped. Book itself is clean and unmarked, interior clean and unmarked. This is the true first edition of Helen Griffiths wonderful story about "La Bruja", the horse born on the South American pampa, a cross between a thoroughbred and a wild pony. While she was still a foal her mother was killed by lightning and La Bruja learnt early to fight for her existence and grew into a fierce, independent creature whose mixed parentage bequeathed her a strangely ugly face but wonderful fleetness of foot. In time, she became a legend among the gauchos, coveted for her speed, conspicuous for her ugliness, but cunning in her ways, and those who attempted to capture her had to fight against a deep hatred of man and her experience of their cruelty. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages .

I read this book when I was a child (many decades ago) and I will never, ever forget it. It played a part in what I am and what I feel.
